Aderant Expert Cloud vs. 3E/Elite Cloud: A Migration Guide for Law Firms

Both Aderant and Elite now offer cloud-hosted versions of their flagship practice management platforms. Here's what actually changes during a migration, and where firms most often get it wrong.

Most firms running Aderant Expert or 3E/Elite on-premise are, at some point, going to face the cloud question — whether that's driven by aging infrastructure, a hardware refresh cycle, or simply the vendor's own roadmap pushing customers toward hosted versions. Having run both Aderant Expert Cloud and 3E/Elite Cloud implementations, the pattern of what goes right and what goes wrong is fairly consistent across firms.

It's Not a Lift-and-Shift

The biggest misconception we see is treating a cloud migration like a server move — copy the database, point users to a new URL, done. In practice, both Aderant Expert Cloud and 3E/Elite Cloud involve real architectural changes: how integrations authenticate, how custom reports and templates are deployed, how print drivers and time-entry add-ins behave, and how your billing workflows (especially anything touching eBillingHub or BillBlast for e-billing compliance) connect back into the core system.

Where Aderant Expert Cloud Migrations Get Tricky

Where 3E/Elite Cloud Migrations Get Tricky

A Practical Pre-Migration Checklist

  1. Inventory every integration touching the practice management system — billing, DMS, time capture, expense (Chrome River, Concur), and any custom collections tooling.
  2. Test custom reports and templates against a sandbox/staging instance before cutover, not after.
  3. Confirm your e-billing pipeline (eBillingHub, BillBlast) and any Collections Optimizer workflows are validated end-to-end in the new environment.
  4. Plan a parallel-run period — even a short one catches issues a big-bang cutover won't.
  5. Document the rollback plan before you need it, not during an incident.

The Bottom Line

Both platforms' cloud offerings are mature and worth moving to — the ongoing maintenance and infrastructure burden they remove is real. But a successful migration depends far more on integration and workflow validation than on the platform switch itself. Budget the time for that validation work, and the cutover weekend becomes a formality rather than a fire drill.
